EDWIN HOEK The day I bought my first DSLR camera, a whole new world opened up to me. I was able to fully express myself and immerse myself in technology. That was when my passion for photography was born—both for nature and urban landscapes, as well as macro photography. Now, 15 years later, I can say that my passion for imagery and technology has grown into a role as a recognized workshop instructor for both beginning and advanced photographers. Together with my wife, Ilona Swinkels—who is also a passionate photographer—I have been running a photography business for several years called Heartsense Photography, and we are very proud of it. Here, I give various workshops, deliver lectures on topics such as evening and night photography, and continuously develop new workshops. Photography brought me adventure, as we began traveling together on photography trips through places such as Northern Ireland and Scotland, crossing many epic landscapes. Driven by the golden hour or the blue hour in the morning or evening, we repeatedly tried to be at the right location at exactly the right time. Locations, timing, and sunsets are a constant topic of conversation. Even during my work as an auto body spray painter, I was already thinking about routes to beautiful locations and planning my weekends. My interest in photography has led me to master the use of various light sources, such as studio lighting, flash, and natural daylight. I aim to capture emotions using appropriate lighting—warm and soft, but also bold and raw, as in street photography. What is essential is having a good eye for detail, such as reading subtle shadows and warm light at the moment you take the photograph.
