Mijn levenslied is:
WILLEM STEENIS 18-03-1965 Al sinds mijn jonge jaren fotografeer ik. Vanuit mijn werk bij Defensie in de jaren 90 ben ik mij meer met vakgebonden fotografie gaan bezighouden. Begin jaren ‘90 werkte ik met Nikon als een van de eerste digitale camera’s. Een hele verandering! Geen fotorolletjes meer en de digitale (r)evolutie begon. Zo liep ik in 1997 rond met een Minolta Dimage V inclusief een extra batterijpack aan de riem. Vanuit mijn studie ben ik veel bezig geweest met satellietfotografie en fotogrammetrie als onderdeel van mijn doctoraal aan de Vrije Universiteit van Amsterdam. Maar met al deze theorie blijft heel veel oefenen en uitproberen nog steeds de kern om goede en mooie foto’s te maken. Als ondernemer lever ik adviesdiensten op het gebied van informatievoorziening en ICT. Fotografie is ook een dienst die ik aanbied, daar zou ik meer tijd aan moeten besteden! Zakelijk schiet ik vooral bedrijfsevenementen, bruiloften, concerten en festivals. Mijn favoriete genres zijn reisfotografie, concertfotografie, straatfotografie en sportfotografie. In mijn werk probeer ik een sterke en verhalende stijl neer te zetten. Vaak gekenmerkt door mooi licht en oog voor detail, beelden die emotie en sfeer blijvend vastleggen. Daarnaast vind ik het belangrijk om authentiek werk op te leveren, zo min mogelijk nabewerking is mijn streven. Dit vraagt veel van de creativiteit, compositie en inzicht, maar het levert ook weer rust op. Je moet je tijd nemen voor een foto. Ik fotografeer met Leica, de ‘looks’ en oerdegelijke kwaliteit van de apparatuur en de signatuur van foto’s waren voor mij doorslaggevend. Fotografie is voor mij een continu leerproces. Je moet blijven inspelen op situaties, technologieën en trends. Daarom is het zo leuk om bij CCC en de FotoUnie workshops te volgen om weer ervaring op te doen. WILLEM STEENIS 18 March 1965 I have been photographing since my early years. Through my work with the Dutch Defence forces in the 1990s, I became increasingly involved in professional, field-related photography. In the beginning of the nineties, I worked with one of the first Nikon digital cameras. A major change! No more film rolls, and the digital (r)evolution began. As early as 1997, I was already working with a Minolta Dimage V, complete with an extra battery pack on my belt. During my studies, I worked extensively with satellite photography and photogrammetry as part of my master’s degree at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. However, despite all this theory, constant practice and experimentation remain the core of creating strong and compelling photographs. As an entrepreneur, I provide consultancy services in the field of information management and ICT. Photography is also a service I offer—one I should devote more time to. Professionally, I mainly photograph (corporate) events, weddings, concerts, and festivals. My favourite genres are travel photography, concert photography, street photography, and sports photography. In my work, I aim to create a strong, narrative style, often characterized by beautiful light and attention to detail—images that capture emotion and atmosphere in a lasting way. I also believe it is important to deliver authentic work, with as little post-processing as possible. This demands a great deal of creativity, composition, and insight, but it also brings a sense of calm. You must take your time for a photograph. I shoot with Leica; the distinctive look, rock-solid build quality, and the signature of the images were decisive for me. Photography is a continuous learning process. You must keep responding to situations, technologies, and trends. That is why I enjoy attending workshops at CCC and FotoUnie—to gain new experience every time.
